Modern Times (1975)

"Modern Times" is an absolute scorcher of a record. Once again, the album cover features Doctor Strange at the center of the artwork. With a voice radiating warmth and musicianship that emanates genius, Al effortlessly draws you into his sonic universe from the very first chord. To understand why “Modern Times” is so strong and flawless, one must consider the record's producer. That factor used to carry significant weight! The album boasts the incomparable Alan Parsons as its producer, a name we all know and love. Alan and Al form an almost overwhelmingly powerful duo.

Opening with the red hot “Carol," the album introduces an abundance of intricate guitar work and storytelling. It's hard to emphasize just how rapidly this song has climbed the ranks of the Best Al Stewart Songs. Featuring an incredibly catchy chorus, accompanied by dynamic energy, driving percussion, and piano and guitar work that'll leave your head spinning, “Carol” firmly establishes itself among the greats. As the record unfolds, tracks like "Sirens of Titan" blend folk-rock elements with subtle jazz and blues nuances. The guitar solos possess an almost haunting quality, while the piano playing resonates with depth and richness.

“What’s Going On?” carries a percussive Bossa-Nova-like feel, further enhanced by the entrance of Spanish guitar work. And what elevates this song even more? A ridiculously catchy chorus and an impressive harmonica solo. If you're not singing along after the initial listen, you are boring. “Not The One” also flaunts a subtle Bossa-Nova influence at the outset. This mid-tempo track narrates the tale of a girl who doesn't consider you as "the one." Good luck getting over her now, my friend...

“Next Time” features a rich acoustic guitar and harmonica arrangement, putting emphasis on each individual note played. “Apple Cider Re-Constitution" injects a bluesy folk-rock style that raises the energy once more. Every instrument takes a bold stance, from the ever-present bass guitar to soaring orchestration, driving drums, and intricate, rich piano and guitar work. “The Dark and the Rolling Sea" introduces a maritime essence, with deep, dark, and rich instrumentation. The haunting guitar and orchestration linger, creating an almost cinematic-like ambiance where each note played resonates.

The album's title track, "Modern Times," stands as the pinnacle achievement. With evocative lyrics and masterful composition, it encapsulates the brilliance of the entire album in a single song. "Modern Times" remains a prime example of thematic and coherent work. Each song contributes to the larger narrative, enhancing the overall impact.

Al Stewart's "Modern Times" isn't just an album; it's a storytelling masterclass through music. It encourages you to recline, immerse yourself, and become an integral part of its rich landscape of sound and emotion. Once again, a well deserved entry into the NSA list. There will be absolutely no argument on that one.

Own it, Stream it, Forget about it?

Honestly every song on this album is a highlight song. This is such an unbelievably strong No Skip Album and anything less than owning would be shameful. Stream the dickens out of it until you can find a copy, though.
