Sting
Sting was an obvious talent right out the gate when he was with The Police, but it wasn’t until he left the band and pursued a solo career did he truly shine. At least in my opinion, as I firmly believe out of the five studio albums released by The Police, you could fit every great Police song on one disc or one greatest hits collection. The same cannot be said for Sting’s solo work.
Initially, Sting blended the pop rock music he was known for during his time with The Police with his love for jazz, world music, and many other genres. This kind of creativity and innovation mixed with his strong songwriting skills and musical prowess aided in his attempt to be seen as a serious musician. Sting succeeded with this as his first six albums offer so much variety with expert song crafting and imagination. They are truly incredible pieces of art.
It is after these core records, Sting decided he has proven all he needs to prove and decides to explore other bizarre paths. Sting wrote a broadway record, collaborated on an opera, a sultry and depressing “holiday” winter record, classical compositions, an album with a symphony orchestra, a collaborative reggae album, and the most odd album created with nothing but medieval instruments in a style that is called “Chamber Music”. The kind of stuff you would find in “Ye Olde England” was the backbone of the record.
I have chosen to omit some records from my overall ranking of his work as I don’t believe I can fairly critique all of them. The Chamber Orchestra Peter and The Wolf album, Songs From The Labyrinth (Chamber Music album), and Welcome to The Voice (Opera) will not be added. From an opera perspective I cannot say whether Welcome to The Voice is good or not and I can’t say the same for Peter and The Wolf as I’m not a classical music buff. Nor am I a Chamber music elitist.

All in all, Sting is by far an artist worth dedicating your time towards. Sting will go down as one of the greatest and most influential singers, musicians and songwriters of all time and he absolutely deserves it. He has something to everyone to enjoy, whether that is jazz, pop, rock, soul, funk, dance, folk, classical music, chamber music, reggae, or sea shantys. Whatever you like, Sting has dabbled in it. Go give his stuff a listen and thank me later.
