The Warning
The Warning, a powerhouse trio from Monterrey, Mexico, has taken the rock world by storm since their early days, starting with viral internet fame and blossoming into a formidable presence on the global stage. With each release, sisters Daniela (Dany), Paulina (Pau), and Alejandra (Ale) Villarreal have steadily built an unmistakable sound and style that’s uniquely theirs, blending hard-hitting rock with nuanced storytelling and musical experimentation. Their path is a testament to their artistic evolution and tenacity, displaying growth in skill, maturity, and message with each record. Oh, and did I mention that they were all born in the 2000s? They are a band that’s already hit their 10 year mile stone. Let that sink in …
The Warning’s journey began when their cover of Metallica's Enter Sandman went viral, showcasing their raw talent and infectious energy. The Villarreal sisters were just little girls at this time, but they already had a command of their instruments and an intuitive sense for rock’s power and intensity. This early spotlight set the stage for their debut EP, Escape The Mind. The EP introduced the world to the band’s ability to blend fierce riffs and melodic sensibilities. Escape The Mind may be an early snapshot, but it’s an essential piece of The Warning's story. The potential is evident in each of these early tracks, showing that the road to greatness is often paved with raw, unrefined moments. It’s a treat to witness the foundation of a band that would go on to redefine what it means to be young, female, and absolutely relentless in the rock scene. Here, the girls really laid the groundwork for their signature style—a mix of dynamic instrumentation and powerful storytelling—that has only intensified with time.
Their debut full-length album, XXI Century Blood, showcased a band on a mission, channeling the discontent and anxieties of a younger generation. Still in their teens, the sisters used the album to address social and political themes that resonated widely. Dany’s voice became a rallying call, Pau’s drumming provided a fierce backbone, and Ale’s bass held it all together with power and poise. The songs on this album carried a youthful defiance and rawness, capturing their unfiltered responses to the world around them. The Warning’s growth as musicians was already beyond tangible on this record. The difference in the execution and musicianship between Escape The Mind and XXI Century Blood is mind boggling.
With their sophomore record, Queen of the Murder Scene, The Warning reached new heights, crafting a rock opera that was both conceptually and musically ambitious. This album tells a dark, intricate story of obsession, revenge, and identity, weaving a narrative that keeps listeners on edge from start to finish. Keeping in mind that this concept record was entirely written and performed by an 18, 16, and 13 year old is totally bananas. The depth of songwriting highlighted their ability to balance lyrical storytelling with intense, theatrical instrumentation. The sisters’ synergy was on full display here, with each song contributing to the narrative arc, pushing them beyond typical rock structures in a completely refreshing and unheard of way for this day and age. Queen of the Murder Scene solidified The Warning’s reputation as a band willing to push boundaries and challenge their listeners. If you’re not sold by their debut, Queen of the Murder Scene will hold you captive. We are also treated to a killer single released before their third record, Narcisista, which in a Spanish ass-kicker of a song!
In 2022’s ERROR, The Warning took another leap forward, addressing themes of self-discovery, resilience, and social scrutiny. The album marked a period of introspection and exploration, where they looked inward as much as outward. Songs like Disciple resonate with defiance, while tracks such as Animosity and Martirio touch on vulnerability and existential questions. The album’s production was meticulous, with each track layered and refined to create a sound that was polished but still raw with emotion. Up until this point, ERROR was the girls’ tightest and most cohesive sounding record. Hard to imagine due to the strength of Queen of the Murder Scene, but each record the Villarreal’s put out just gets better and better. Here, they really took a step toward a more nuanced sound without sacrificing the intensity and passion that had become their trademark.
In their latest release, Keep Me Fed, The Warning dives into themes of overindulgence, disillusionment, and the modern-day hunger for satisfaction. The album captures the tension between desire and restraint, with songs like Consume and More confronting society’s fixation on excess. The Warning deftly balances aggressive rock with introspective lyrics, crafting a record that feels relevant. They’ve managed to capture the essence of excess in our lives, pairing insightful lyrics with bold instrumentation that sets this record apart from their previous records. Here, Dany, Pau, and Ale showcase not only their technical prowess but also a sharpened ability to blend contrasting moods and emotions, creating an album that’s as thoughtful as it is energetic.
