Regimental Sgt. Zippo (1968/2022)

Regimental Sgt. Zippo is the whimsical, yet heavier, younger brother of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper. Although, recorded in 1968 but released in 2022, Elton John explores the psychedelic landscape that Sgt. Zippo represents, creating a fuzzy, ornate, and melodic record that fits perfectly into the late 1960s. While Regimental Sgt. Zippo didn't become Elton's debut record and while it may not be as great as his actual debut, Empty Sky, it has its shining moments.

The record kicks off with the captivating tracks When I Was Tealby Abbey and And The Clock Goes Round, showcasing grand organs and dramatic piano riffs that soar to great heights. The latter track reminiscently nods to The Animals' darker 1960s sound, infused with Elton John's signature harmonies and killer piano.

The record continues with the commercial-sounding soft pop track Turn To Me and the rocking title track Regimental Sgt. Zippo. The organs on A Dandelion Dies In The Wind are as prevalent as ever, while You'll Be Sorry To See Me Go represents the essence of Elton John's sound, combining backing harmonies and a lively piano that make it a standout and one of the best of his early years.

However, a few songs like Tartan Coloured Lady, Angel Tree, Sitting Doing Nothing, and Hourglass fail to make a lasting impression, lacking melodic strength compared to the rest of the album. Although they thematically fit within the record's confines, they may not find themselves on the repeat outside of it.
