Man Of Colours (1987)
Man Of Colors is often cited as the band's most commercially successful record. While some fans may view the record’s more polished and commercially accessible sound as a departure from the band's earlier, more experimental and “interesting” work, it's hard to deny that the album is a cohesive and consistently enjoyable listening experience. It is also hard to deny this record its well earned No Skip Album trophy. Top class from start to finish, even including the Bonus Tracks on the Deluxe album.
The record opens with the upbeat and infectious Crazy, which immediately sets the tone for the album with its catchy hooks, driving beat, and sing-along chorus. In a memorable and anthemic manner, Crazy is one of the greatest 80s pop love songs of all time. From there, the album moves to one of its most enduring hits in Electric Blue. A completely slick and polished commercial hit, Electric Blue is instantly recognizable.
This strong start to the album only continues moving into the propulsive dance-rock of Nothing Too Serious. The saxophone and horn section carry this song to incredible heights. The upbeat and almost reggae styled guitar riff in the verses demand you to bop your head and stomp your feet. The title track, Man Of Colors, is a lush, atmospheric ballad that showcases the band's melodic prowess and songwriting ability. It is gorgeous with its oboe accents, chimes and backing harmonies.
Later entries to the record include the commercial dance-pop of My Obsession and the dreamy, introspective The Kingdom of which I cannot get enough of. That goes for Girl In the Moon as well. It is dreamy and atmospheric but it is also an absolute sing-along rocker.
While some fans may view the record’s commercial success as a departure from the more artsy glam new wave sound the band has been knees deep in, it's hard to deny that Man Of Colors is a strong and musically diverse record that showcases the band's evolving sound and musical talent. The band's use of synths, guitars, and atmospheric and commercial pop production creates a rich sounding and timeless album.
Man Of Colors is a massive standout in the band's discography and a must-listen for fans of '80s synth-pop and new wave. It is now my top album from Icehouse and for good reason. It's clear that Icehouse knew how to craft a catchy, infectious pop song without sacrificing their artistic integrity, and Man Of Colors is a prime example of this.
