The Swing (1984)
INXS's fourth studio album, ‘The Swing’, is a funky, groovy record that showcases the band's ability to blend rock, pop, and dance music seamlessly. The album was produced with help from the talented Nile Rogers, and features some of the band's biggest hits, solidifying their status as one of the most innovative and influential bands of the 80s.
The album's opening track, "Original Sin," sets the tone with its infectious beat, catchy chorus, and Michael Hutchence's smooth vocals. The song's use of horns and synths add a layer of funk to the band's sound, which is a recurring theme throughout this record. “I Send a Message” is wildly funky with its whimsical bass line and groove, whereas “The Swing” is a pounding rocker with a great sing-along chorus. “Johnson's Aeroplane" is another highlight, with its funky guitar riffs, orchestral accents and great tenor saxophone solo. “Burn For You” is also great with its rhythmic dippy-ness.
But, there are a few weaker tracks on the album, such as "Melting in the Sun," which lacks the same level of catchiness and energy as the rest of the album, but these moments are few and far between.
Overall, ‘The Swing’ is a fantastic album that showcases INXS entering the height of their powers. The band's ability to blend different genres and styles of music, combined with Michael Hutchence's charismatic vocals and the band's tight musicianship, make for a listening experience that is both energetic and engaging. Even 30 years after its release, ‘The Swing’ remains a timeless record that is sure to get you dancing and singing along.
