Symphonicities (2010)

Symphonicities is a record that features new recordings of some of Sting's classic songs, accompanied by a symphony orchestra. While the record is well-produced and showcases Sting's talent as a songwriter, I believe it falls short, missing the mark of being a standout or innovative release.

On the positive side, the arrangements of the songs are impressive, with the symphony orchestra adding a rich and dynamic sound to the tracks. Sting's voice is also in top form, as he delivers powerful and emotional performances that are backed up by the orchestra's sweeping instrumentation.

However, the record ultimately feels a bit safe and predictable. When hearing that the record is reimagining some of Sting’s best work, you already envision how it might sound. Whatever you thought it would be is what it turned out to be. While the symphonic arrangements are well-done, they don't add much in terms of innovation or creativity. The songs on the album are all well-known hits, so there are no surprises in terms of the track selection. You’re just left feeling that this could have been so much more.

Symphonicities is a solid record for what it is - a collection of orchestral renditions of classic Sting songs. It doesn't offer much in the way of new material or innovative arrangements which is a bit of a missed opportunity. Fans of Sting's music will likely enjoy the album once or twice, as it offers a pleasant listening experience, but it is not be the standout release that some were hoping for.

Own it, Stream it, Forget about it?

Completely and entirely depends on whether or not you are into orchestral music. If so, go ahead and buy this but know that it is safe in terms of what it went for. If that puts you off, then stream it. For everyone else, it’s worth a first listen just to know what it was, but after that it’s alright if you don’t go back to it.
