Sparks of Ancient Light (2008)
"Sparks of Ancient Light" unfolds as a unique chapter in Al Stewart's discography, presenting a blend of historical depth and musical experimentation. While some tracks may showcase a departure from his usual mature sound, the album promises an exploration of historical narratives, a recent focus in Stewart's lyricism.
Musically departing from Stewart's typical maturity, the bouncy piano in "Lord Salisbury" doesn't quite resonate. However, the historical emphasis is evident on this track, following the themes of this records predecessor. “(A Child’s View of) The Eisenhower Years” immediately captivates with its addictive shuffle and chord progression, standing out as one of the album's best. Definitely a song I can’t get enough of.
“The Ear of the Night” begins with a compelling acoustic guitar riff that exemplifies Stewart's strength. Additional guitars, piano, and drums contribute to help richen this layered track. “Hanno the Navigator” is filled with great harmonies, organs, and a rich guitar solo that showcases the depth of instrumentation on this record. Although now always effective.
“Shah of Shahs” features nice orchestration, but the track doesn't leave a lasting impression. With great pace, musicianship, and energy, "Angry Bird" seems like the making of a timeless classic, but it falls slightly short due to an underwhelming chorus and melody. “Loneliest Place on the Map” is a ballad that could be easily overlooked, yet it holds attention with dramatic elements and exceptional musicianship. Much like this, “Sleepwalking” is dreamy and calming, providing a serene interlude within the album.
“Football Hero” is a fantastic track. Especially for soccer/football enthusiasts like myself, this song really works. Its folky, funky vibe delivers great mellow fun. “Elvis at the Wheel” delivers a great guitar solo and energetic orchestration adding some dynamic flair to the record. Towards the end of the album we get “Silver Kettle.” An ideal accompaniment to a rainy day, this track weaves storytelling with strings. And “Like William McKinley” is a throwback to the style of "Bedsitter Images.”
This track encapsulates the classic and original Al Stewart sound but with refined execution. "Sparks of Ancient Light" navigates a dynamic musical landscape, offering glimpses of historical storytelling and experimentation. While some tracks may vary in impact, the album captures the essence of the more current Al Stewart sound.

Own it, Stream it, Forget about it?
Clocking in as Al’s last/most current studio record, I might as well say own it. It’s arguably stronger than his last record and there are many many things to love on this. It’s easy listening and the things that don’t work aren’t unlistenable by any means. Stream it, find a copy, own it. Complete the discography!
