The Berlin Tapes (1995)

The Berlin Tapes is a unique record that really showcases Icehouse's versatility as a band. Recorded in Berlin, the album features stripped-down, acoustic versions of classic songs by Frank Sinatra, The Cure, David Bowie and other legendary artists.

The group’s cover of Bowie's Heroes, is great and features a beautifully arranged acoustic guitar melody with Iva Davies’ distinctive vocals. The band's interpretation of this iconic song is both reverent and fresh, and stands out as one of the album's strongest moments.

Throughout the record, Icehouse demonstrates their ability to reinterpret classic songs in a way that honors the original while adding their own unique flair. The record’s more intimate, acoustic approach brings a new perspective to these timeless tracks, and highlights the band's musicianship and artistry.

The Berlin Tapes is a good listen for fans of Icehouse, as well as anyone who appreciates acoustic interpretations of classic songs. It's a testament to the band's creativity and talent, and a fascinating glimpse into their musical influences and inspirations.

Own it, Stream it, Forget about it?

One could argue you could get away with just streaming this album. It is a really nice sounding record and it is definitely worth a listen, but I am not sure how often I will want to turn back to this record as a whole and play it on repeat. I say stream it, save the songs that you like and keep it moving.
