NEW (2013)
NEW stands as a remarkably rejuvenating record in Paul McCartney's extensive repertoire. Surprisingly fresh, especially considering McCartney's illustrious five-decade career, it sees him boldly embracing the modern music trends of the 2010’s with the assistance of acclaimed collaborators like Mark Ronson and Giles Martin. The result? McCartney's strongest studio effort in years, a confident blend of pop and rock that firmly establishes its place among his later works.
From the outset, NEW exudes a palpable sense of vitality and innovation. Tracks like Save Us burst forth with swagger, boasting crisp production, electrifying energy, and hooks that stand the test of time. It's a reflection of McCartney's ability to seamlessly integrate contemporary pop-rock sensibilities into his signature sound. Even in more acoustically driven numbers like On My Way To Work, the album retains its infectious energy, thanks in no small part to its unique and creative song structures.
While NEW is filled with much to praise, it's not without its missteps. The single Queenie Eye, for instance, falls short, feeling somewhat like a rock 'n' roll nursery rhyme amidst the album's otherwise strong offerings. However, any doubts are swiftly dispelled with tracks like the eponymous New, a standout with its impeccable harmonies, or the rich acoustic depth of Hosanna. After giving Hosana a few listens, it really grew on me as this deep and rich acoustic number. It even feels like it could be an Alice and Chains song from their acoustic Jar of Flies EP or their MTV Unplugged album.
One of the album's most experimental tracks, Appreciate, demonstrates McCartney's willingness to push boundaries, exploring new sonic territories with modern production techniques. It's a refreshing departure from his previous work and a testament to his ongoing musical evolution. While some tracks in the album's latter half may feel like filler, each still contributes thematically and stylistically to the album's cohesive vision.
In sum, NEW stands as a reflection of McCartney's enduring creativity and adaptability. It's a confirmation of his ability to innovate and evolve, even after decades in the industry. NEW reaffirms McCartney's status as a musical icon while simultaneously charting new territory for his storied career.
