if You’re not afraid, i’m not afraid (2019)

A Polished Evolution

Queen of Jeans' sophomore album, if You’re not afraid, i’m not afraid, marks a significant step forward for the Philadelphia-based band. Building on the foundation laid by their debut record, Dig Yourself, if You’re not afraid, i’m not afraid embraces a more polished and pop-oriented sound, showcasing the band's growth and maturity without losing their unique charm.

The record opens with Get Lost, turning up the pop levels and presenting a natural progression for the band. The track feels more polished, signaling an evolution for the group while maintaining their signature style. It's an energetic yet dreamy start that sets the tone shift for the rest of the record, balancing pop sensibilities with the band's indie rock roots.

All the Same highlights the band's improved and more confident vocals and instrumentation, moving towards a euphoric pop anthem feel. The shift towards the more polished, shimmery indie rock contrasts with the darker, more mellow post-punk sound of their previous record. Queen of Jeans' shows a versatility and willingness to evolve and explore new sonic territories. That is really all you can ask for from a band you like. Don’t lose that thing we love about you, but don’t repeat your last work. Just like in life, as you move forward you have got to grow.

Tell Me stands out with its gorgeous backing harmonies that carry the song from start to finish. The creative key change and vibe drop halfway through showcase the band's maturity and creativity in crafting their music. This track is a testament to their growth as musicians and their ability to keep listeners engaged. Especially with Devora’s mesmerizing vocals and inflection.

Centuries returns us to the pop rock anthemic feel of the first two tracks, especially as the song closes. The backing vocals and harmonies add depth and richness, becoming a highlight of the track. This one, along with Only Obvious to You, continues the trend of strong, harmonious vocals that define the album.

Rum Cheeks mark a return to some of the moodier, darker elements of the first record. The personal lyrics and melancholic feelings give the song a raw, emotional edge that contrasts with the records otherwise polished soundscape. The extra layer of introspection added here is expertly placed on the record to give us breathing room for what is to follow.

Bloomed offers wonderful energy with some grimier hi-fi guitar filters and true indie rock energy, while Not a Minute Too Soon features a vocal performance reminiscent of early 2000s moody, mid-tempo’d pop rock, akin to bands like Lifehouse. Specifically Lifehouse’s self-titled third album, or their sophomore record, Stanley Climbfall. It's familiar and addictive and it showcases the unreal backing vocals that have become a hallmark of Queen of Jeans.

I Am in Love with Your Mind subtly nods back to 1960s guitar walk lines and beach rock, but overall represents the pop evolution of their sound. This track, like many others on the record, balances nostalgia with a fresh, modern approach, detailing the band's ability to blend different influences seamlessly.

On Your Shoulder adds another layer of depth to the record with its introspective lyrics and intricate instrumentation. The song's gentle build and emotional resonance encapsulates the record’s overarching themes of vulnerability and resilience.

The record closes with Take It All Away, a grandiose and uplifting track highlighted by its beautiful string orchestration. It's an anthemic, larger-than-life song that lays the groundwork for the band's future endeavors. The orchestration and overall production on this track are truly remarkable, leaving listeners with a sense of awe and anticipation for what's yet to come.

if You’re not afraid, i’m not afraid is a polished and natural evolution of Queen of Jeans' sound. The record is a harmonious blend of indie rock, pop, and nostalgic elements, showcasing the band's growth and versatility. With its lush harmonies, production, and emotional depth, this record solidifies Queen of Jeans as a significant force in the indie music scene, proving that they are unafraid to push boundaries and evolve their sound.

I am beginning to believe that not discovering Queen of Jeans earlier is one of the biggest blunders of my music listening life. Will that be solidified on their most recent 3rd record All Again?
